Sumitomo Corporation, established in 1919, is a global trading and business investment company in Japan which currently owns approximately 23 GW gross capacity (10GW net ownership capacity) of power generation under operation across the world. In New Zealand, we have rich experiences in delivering geothermal power plants with 415MW capacity in total.

Our Infrastructure Energy Business

Our mission is providing global infrastructure that meets the needs of each country, region and society, we contribute to the building of a society where people can live in harmony with the global environment and to the development of local communities and industries across the world. In the global power infrastructure field, we are engaged in large-scale I(W)PP and power plant EPC business, as well as next-generation electric power business development. As for I(W)PP business, We currently own approximately 23 GW gross capacity (10GW net ownership capacity) of power generation under operation across the world, which include a broad range of renewable power such as offshore wind, onshore wind, solar PV, hydro, geothermal and biomass. We are aiming to further expand our renewable portfolio to contribute the energy transition all over the world.

Our Business in New Zealand

Since 1963, Sumitomo Corporation maintains its office in New Zealand.

In New Zealand, we have rich experiences in delivering geothermal power plants. We have successfully completed the two geothermal power plant projects (Kawerau: 100MW and Nga Awa Purua: 140MW) and are currently constructing one geothermal power plant project (Tauhara: 175MW).

Not only in the infrastructure and energy industry, we also own frozen carrot juice manufacturing and exporting business, and planting, forest management and log sales business, which owns over 50,000 ha forest asset in NZ.

With the renewable power project, our goal is to contribute the energy transition in New Zealand by capabilities of Development, Financing, Marketing, EPC and Asset Management which we gained through our extensive experiences in solar, onshore/offshore wind, gas power and other type of power business among the world, and also the synergy with other assets that we currently own in New Zealand to create new value for the industries.
