Paul Botha is a Chartered mechanical engineer who has worked in the wind energy industry for over 27 years. He has the role of Wind Technical Strategy Manager at Meridian Energy where he has worked for 15 years.
Paul leads a technical team that is responsible for the resource investigation, wind measurements, wind analysis, wind flow modelling, wind farm design, technical aspects of consenting and turbine procurement. His team works closely with others during the wind farm development, construction and operational phases. Paul has been involved with the development of Meridian’s five New Zealand wind farms and Meridian’s single wind turbine in Wellington. He has also been involved with Meridian’s wind development activities in Australia and Antarctica.
Paul’s career in the wind energy industry commenced in the UK where he worked for both the Wind Energy Group and National Wind Power at the time the first wind farms were installed there. After moving to New Zealand he worked as a consultant in the wind industry which included involvement in the development of both the Haunui wind farm and Stages 1 and 2 of the Tararua Wind Farm.
Paul is a member of both the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institute of Acoustics (IOA). He was part of the committee which drafted the New Zealand Standard for wind farm noise and its subsequent update in 2010.
