Congratulations to NZWEA member, Hiringa Energy and their partners Ballance Agri-Nutrients Ltd, Todd , Parininihi Ki Waitotara Incorporation and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment on reaching Financial Close for the Kapuni Project — a landmark integrated wind energy and green hydrogen development in South Taranaki.
Kapuni will be the first project in New Zealand to combine wind generation, industrial renewable electricity supply, and green hydrogen production at scale, enabling simultaneous decarbonisation across transport, energy, industry and agriculture.
Key highlights:
✅Utilises four x 6.4MW Vestas wind turbines delivering 25.6 MW and ~100 GWh/year of renewable electricity
✅A 5 MW electrolyser producing up to 2 tonnes of green hydrogen per day
✅Renewable power supporting on-site industry, green hydrogen for transport and fertiliser production, with exports to the national grid
✅New local jobs during construction and operations, plus added sovereign generation strengthening energy security
This project also marks Taranaki’s first green hydrogen production and the largest green hydrogen capacity in New Zealand .
At NZWEA, we’re excited to see wind energy playing a central role in unlocking integrated energy solutions and supporting resilient regional growth. A powerful example of how renewable energy can deliver real outcomes.
