Case study on the development of the wind industry

In 2016, the then CE of NZWEA, Eric Pyle prepared a report on the NZ wind industry for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). He presented the report to an APEC conference in Vietnam in late 2016.

The Report, which tracks the development of the NZ wind industry, has been well received and is now available.

In his Report Eric highlights the importance of the early research work undertaken by universities to identify the world class wind resource that NZ has. In particular he cites the visionary work of Neil Cherry (Lincoln College, Canterbury University) and Keith Dawber (Otago University). A 1985 report by Neil titled Wind Energy Resource Survey of New Zealand is specifically mentioned.

Eric also notes the development of market rules to accommodate wind and the Wind Grid Integration Project as key industry milestones.

The Report includes a timeline of the NZ wind industry’s development and Eric’s recommendations on actions developing economies should take to develop wind energy.
