Greater Wellington Regional Council announce successful tender for the Puketiro wind farm project (7-Dec-'06)

The Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) has announced the successful tender for the Puketiro wind farm site and has surprised many by awarding the development rights for the site to a developer new to the New Zealand market. Renewable Energy Systems (RES) of the UK headed off a field of 6 other companies, including established generators Meridian Energy, Contact Energy Ltd, Mighty River Power Ltd and Genesis Energy. Though new to NZ, RES have constructed over 1200 MW of wind energy capacity worldwide and are currently developing a project in Australia . RES will now establish an office in Wellington and commence development activities towards the submission of a resource consent application, expected in 2008. Press releases from GWRC and RES announcing the decision are available here. We hope to see RES joining the NZWEA in due course.

Eminent engineer to lead New Zealand Wind Energy Association board:
(Media Release 15 November 2006)

“Helping the wind industry fulfill its potential to supply an increasing amount of clean renewable energy to New Zealand homes and industry, fits in perfectly with my values” says Gerry Coates, the new Chair of the Board of the New Zealand Wind Energy Association.

Mr Coates is a consulting engineer, and past President of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand. In that role he led a task force that produced a report on how engineers can assist sustainability − by only using resources that will last over time. “Using more renewable wind energy is an essential step towards this more sustainable future”, he says. This aligns with Prime Minister Helen Clark’s recently stated aim for New Zealand “to be the first country which is truly sustainable – not by sacrificing our living standards, but by being smart and determined”. Mr Coates sees renewable energy as a key part of that strategy.

Construction of Stage 3 of TrustPower's Tararua Windfarm (12-Oct-'06)

Construction of stage 3 of TrustPower's Tararua windfarm, which began in January 2006, is now well progressed. The civil component, including foundations and roads is more than 80% complete with 20 of the 31 foundations poured and the remainder expected to be finished before the end of November. The largest road construction in the project, a 30,000 cubic meter fill across a gully, has been completed also. The electrical substation will be commissioned in November and the first of two main transformers arrived on site on October 11th, taking more than 1 hour to get up the 1.3km access road. The first turbines are expected to arrive on site in January and electricity production is expected in February, as per the original project plan. Photos»
